Actually Subbuteo:"10 For You" with Antonio Salza!

Guess what? We are back at interviewing Italians! Today we introduce you a Former-Subbuteo player and much more! His name is Antonio and we discover him thanks to this new "10 For You"x Actually Subbuteo:

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?

Mi chiamo Antonio Salza. Ho 55 anni e sono nato a Roma.In questo periodo della mai vita,non lavoro a causa di un investimento stradale e sono disoccupato,in cerca di nuova occupazione.Il gioco del Subbuteo,entra a far parte della mia vita da bambino. La passione per il calcio mi portò a comprare il GIOCAGOL della Atlantic.Il campo era in cartone e i giocatori ricordavano un po quelli di oggi con le basi piatte.La superficie di gioco era adatta ad un pallone semisferico:dopo un po che giocavo con i miei amici,mi venne l'idea di comprare un panno di velluto e con un gessetto bianco ed un righello,realizzai il campo di gioco.Dopo un po di mesi,mia madre,mi regalò la prima confezione del Subbuteo (1976,mi sembra),quella CLUB Edition.Scatola che poi si perse ma fortunatamente ne ho trovata una identica al mercatino dell'usato di Porta Portese (Roma).

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo? 

My name's Antonio Salso.I'm 55 years and I was born in Rome. Im temporarily unemployed because of an accident and I am looking for a new occupation. The Subbuteo game came into my life since I was a kid. My great passion about football/soccer pushed me to buy GIOCAGOAL made by Atlantic. The field was made by cardboard and the players were similar to the nowadays ones with flat bases (CDT). The game surface was suitable for an hemisperical ball. After playing with it for a while with my friends I had the idea of buying a velvet cloth and making lines on it using a chalk and ruler to get my field. After few months my mother gave me the CLUB EDITION from 1976 as a present. I've lost that box unfortunately but also luckily found one back in the Porta Portese's market in Rome.

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo ? (La tua prima volta)

Era il 1976.Dopo che mia madre mi regalò la scatola,iniziammo a giocare in casa mia e ricordo che non avevo una tavola adatta e poggiai il campo su di un compensato molto fino ed ondulato,ma quel panno di stoffa con i giocatori e le porte ci sembravano qualcosa di stupendo. L'unica difficoltà era tenere ferme le porte con i pali quadrati e spesso dovevamo fare come nelle illustrazioni poste nella scatola e quindi con una mano afferravamo il portiere con l'asta e con l'altra mano,tenevamo ferma la porta.Anni dopo ho trovato il modo di fissarle alla tavola,semplicemente con delle fascette da elettricista bloccate con una puntina da disegno.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

It was 1976. After my mother gave me that box, we started to play it at my place and I also remember that I didn't have a proper table for it so I put it on a plywood thing and wavy but still that green pitch,those little players and the goals looked amazing to us. The only difficult thing was to keep the square posts'goals steady, so sometimes we had to do like you could see in the Subbuteo illustrations on the box - using one hand for the keeper and another hand for keeping the goal steady! I found the the way to keep them still several years later simply using some electrician's stripes blocked by a drawing needle.

3)Da quanto tempo dipingi squadre Subbuteo? 

Le dipingo dal 1978.Continuo anche oggi,anche se il tempo per dedicarmi alla pittura delle miniature è sempre troppo poco. Non sono un pittore raffinato,ma per quello che mi riguarda,credo di aver raggiunto un livello discreto e seguo molto i consigli di chi riesce a realizzare dei veri capolavori,traendo spunto da siti come oldsubbuteoblog e su YouTube.Non uso decalcomanie ma solo pennello e i mitici colori a smalto della Humbrol e qualche volta,anche alcuni ottimi smalti della Rewell.

3)How long have you been painting teams for?

I paint teams since 1978. I keep doing it nowadays even if my time is limited. I am not a fine painter but I think I reached a fair enough level and I also listen to advices given to me by people that can really make materpieces. I take inspirations also from OldSubbuteoBlog and on Youtube.I don't do decals but I only use the brush a the legendary Humbrol colours. Sometimes I also use Rewell's varnish.

4)Hai mai partecipato ad eventi Subbuteo ? Se si quali ? Hai mai vinto qualche competizione di Subbuteo ? se SI Quale ? 

Ho partecipato alla fase regionale del Guerrin Subbuteo,quando ero ragazzino e sono uscito dopo alcune partite.Ricordo che allora c'erano le fasi regionali e la fase nazionale che si giocava vicino a Genova. Poi sono stato iscritto alla FICMS anche come squadra;MERCURY 79,composta da amici e compagni di scuola,ma non abbiamo partecipato a nessun evento,in quanto il club si sciolse dopo poche settimane di vita,per dei contrasti interni.

Ho poi organizzato decine di tornei,sfruttando la disponibilità dell'oratorio della mia parrocchia e nelle case dei miei amici,ma sempre in modo amatoriale e non connesso alla FICMS,ma ci siamo divertiti un mondo. Credo che il successo di questo gioco,sia nel suo aspetto fortemente aggregante.

4)Did you ever take part in Subbuteo Events? If YES which ones? Did you ever win any prize? If YES which ones?

I took part in the Regional phase of the Guerrin Subbuteo when I was a kid and I got kicked out after few matches. I remember there were the Regional and National phases at that time and were played near Genova. I was part of the FICMS even as a team "MERCURY 79",along with my friends  and school mates,but we didn't take part in any events since the club closed after only few weeks from his foundation. I used to organise several tournaments using the church's rooms and at my friends'places but always in a Beginner way and not related to FICMS, but still it was fun. I think the best thing about Subbuteo is the ability of bringing people altogether.

5)Sei anche un collezionista oltre che un ex giocatore ?

Sicuramente!Ho 135 squadre della collezione La Leggenda Vintage Edition,50 Top Spin di cui molte dipinte da me,60 Subbuteo LW e una squadra anni'70 originale.

Purtroppo non ci sono sempre i soldi a disposizione per comprare squadre ed accessori,però ogni tanto,riesco a trovare qualcosa di interessante.Ovviamente ritengo le squadre dipinte da me,come mie creature e non le venderò mai.

5)Do you also collect Subbuteo or you are just a former-player?

Sure I am! I have 135 teams from the La Leggenda Vintage Edition, 50 Top Spin - several painted by me - 60 Light Weight teams and one original team from 70'.
Unfortunately I don't always have money to buy teams and accessories but sometimes I still get something interesting. Obviously I see the teams painted by me like my creations and I will never sell them.

6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita ?Qual e' secondo te la squadra piu' rara (se collezioni) ?

Diciamo che mi affascinano sopratutto le squadre britanniche;Arsenal,West Ham,Celtic,tanto per fare alcuni nomi,ma credo che come per Peter Arthur Adolph,il Queens ParkRangers,abbia un suo fascino tutto particolare. Sono sempre stato attirato dalle casacche tipo ADMIRAL (che vestì anche la nazionale inglese di Keegan e soci...) e ritengo il COVENTRY CITY (nella versione Admiral,appunto),una delle squadre molto difficili da trovare in giro.

6)What's your favourite team? Which one is the rarest ?

I am fascinated by the UK teams like Arsenal, West Ham, Celtic, just to name few of them but I think -just like Peter Arthur Adolph- that the Queen Park Rangers has a particular fascination. I also always loved the ADMIRAL shirts (Used also by the England National Team of Keegan & Co.) and I think Coventry City (Admiral Version) is one of the hardest to find. 

7)Aspetti positivi e negativi dell'Universo Subbuteo?

Come ho già scritto,l'aspetto positivo del Subbuteo è sicuramente la sua enorme capacità di aggregazione e per anni insieme alla passione per questo bellissimo gioco,si sono trasmessi valori di vero FAIR PLAY.Non importava vincere,ma trovare amici con cui giocare e credo che questo spirito sia ancora presente nei giocatori,sopratutto quelli molto giovani,di adesso. Sono tutt'ora un'appassionato del modo di giocare "old".Ritengo bella anche la versione nuova,che si gioca con materiali molto diversi dagli anni'70,ma il fatto che il gioco si realizzi,alla fine,con delle miniature con base piatta e che si muovono con movimenti e tecniche,simili al gioco del biliardo,penso che ci si allontani dall'idea originale che era quella del rendere il Subbuteo il più possibile simile al gioco del calcio,con le sue serpentine e i suoi dribbling. Comunque è solo una mia preferenza personale.

7)Positive and negative aspects of the Subbuteo Universe?

Like I said, The positive aspect of Subbuteo is bringing people together and also developing the real sense of FAIR PLAY. Winning a match wasn't important, but playing with friends was, and I think this still exists in players nowadays, especially the younger ones. Im still very passionate about the Old Subbuteo game style. I also like the new version of it played with very different items compared to the seventies, but I think the fact that the players now have very flat bases it brings the game closer to billiard getting away from the first Idea of Subbuteo of re-creating a game as similar as possible to the real football/soccer, with its dribbling and zig zag. This is just my opinion anyway.

8)Cosa ne pensi dei vari circuiti ed associazioni come FISCT,WASPA e Lega Nazionale Subbuteo?

Le varie associazioni e federazioni internazionali, stanno facendo, in giro per il mondo,un ottimo lavoro e quello che vedo dai video su YouTube,sono sempre più "professionali",nell'organizzare tornei ed eventi. Il Subbuteo dopo l'avvento dei primi videogames,era quasi sparito e si deve molto a quelli della mia generazione,se grazie alla loro passione e ad Internet,questo sport-gioco è ritornato in auge,riscuotendo un enorme successo sopratutto tra i giovani. Stefano Beverini, Andrea Piccaluga e il Team di SUBBUTEOPIA,hanno contribuito molto al rilancio e alla popolarità di questo gioco,ottimamente organizzato,a livello agonistico,dalle varie federazioni.

8)What do you think about FISCT,WASPA and Lega Nazionale Subbuteo circuits?

The various associations and International federations are doing a very good job basing my opinion on what I see from videos on youtube and they are becoming much more professional even in the way they organise tournaments and events. After the first coming of  the videogames the Subbuteo almost completely disappeared and the game owe a lot to the people from our generation if the passion is still alive and also to Internet now. Thanks to it many young people are getting hooked by the game. Stefano Beverini, Andrea Piccaluga and the SUBBUTEOPIA's team played a big part in making the game popular as well.

10)Fatti una domanda e dacci una risposta !

Perchè la ditta che detiene il marchio SUBBUTEO (Hasbro-Net Cam),continua a fare prodotti spesso scadenti,rispetto ad altri marchi nazionali ed esteri,pur fregiandosi della dicitura "Since 1947"?

Credo che in giro e sopratutto sul mercato di Internet,esistano prodotti in grado di soddisfare sia il gioco moderno che quello tipico degli anni '70 e mi riferisco ai prodotti di Astrobase,Top Spin,Extreme,Santiagosoccer e altri. Non so spiegarmi il motivo e bisognerebbe far parte del settore imprenditoriale,per capirci qualcosa di più.E' un dispiacere per me,vedere che proprio chi si fregia del marchio e dell'eredità del nome Subbuteo,al giorno d'oggi non realizzi prodotti degni dello storico passato.Anche le squadre della collezione Fabbri,sono state realizzate in modo un po pacchiano,pur conservando un prezzo modesto.

Why the owner of the Subbuteo brand(Hasbro-Net Cam) keeps making awful new products - compared to other national and international brands, using the claim "SINCE 1947"?

I think there are several products able to satisfy both the new and the old style of game like Astrobase, Top Spin, Extreme, Santiago Soccer and others. I can't explain myself why and maybe you should be an entrepreneur in order to understand that. It's a pity to me to see that the one who can produce items using that SINCE 1947 claim and the name of SUBBUTEO, doesn't make good quality stuff. Even the FABBRI teams have been made in a modest way even if at a decent price.
