1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's
your life related to Subbuteo?
I am Will Van Tongelen from Belgium, 42 years old and I am
married for 17 years with the love of my life and we have 3 beautiful children
(2 girls and 1 boy), a dog and two cats. Professionally, I am a lawyer,
specialized in corporate law and M&A. In my free time I am a football
trainer in the youth academy of Beerschot (Belgian second division but
promotion hopefully this season!).
Subbuteo is my childhood passion and I have never stopped
loving it. Making new teams or sorting out my collection helps me to relax
after a stressful job.
1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?
Mi chiamo Will Van Tongelen dal Belgio, ho 42 anni e sono sposato da 17 con l'amore della mia vita ed abbiamo 3 bellissimi bimbi (2 femmine ed un maschio), un cane e due gatti. Professionalmente sono un avvocato specializzato in diritto d'impresa ed M&A. Nel mio tempo libero sono un allenatore di calcio delle giovanili di Beerschot (Seconda Divisione Belga, si spera in una promozione questa stagione!) Il Subbuteo e' la mia passione da bambino e non ho mai smesso di amarlo. Creare nuove squadre ed aggiornare la mia collezione mi aiuta a rilassarmi dopo uno stressante lavoro.
2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first
time)
My first memory was when I was about 8 years old. Each year
we went with the family on holiday to Cannes in France and there was a
fantastic old toy shop that had a good stock of French Subbuteo teams. Each
holiday I got some teams from my parents and I bought the French football
season guide in which all teams were presented before the start of the season.
This was my inspiration to play the French league and cup with my subbuteo
teams each year. Later I also discovered the subbuteo 1986 world cup teams and
English club teams in Belgian toy shops and started playing different
competitions. The draw of the FA cup rounds and the world cup finals were top
moments. Great childhood memories. More than 30 years later I still have most
of the teams that I got back then and I still cherish them a lot. Amongst
others Nancy 141, Nantes 142, Auxerre 606, Toulon 675, Le Havre 673, PSG 536,

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo ?
La mia prima memoria Subbuteo risale a quando avevo 8 anni. Ogni anni andavamo, con la mia famiglia, in vacanza a Cannes in Francia e c'era un fantastico negozio di vecchi giocattoli con un vasto assortimento di squadre Subbuteo Francesi. Ogni vacanza ricevevo alcune squadre dai miei genitori e comprai inoltre la guida stagionale del calcio francese dove erano rappresentate tutte le squadre prima dell'inizio della stagione. Quella fu la mia ispirazione per giocare la Lega Francese e coppa a Subbuteo. Piu' in la' poi ho scoperto le squadre del Mondiale 1986 e quelle Inglesi, nei negozi di giocattoli in Belgio, iniziando a giocare competizioni differenti. Gli highlights erano i sorteggi della Fa Cup e delle Finali dei Mondiali. Grandissimi ricordi d'infanzia. Piu' di 30 anni dopo ho ancora la maggior parte delle squadre che avevo e le conservo ancora. Squadre tipo Nancy 141,Nantes 142,Auxerre 606,Toulon 675,Le Havre 673,Psg 536,etc.

About ten years ago. When Subbuteo stopped producing teams I
looked for Subbuteo artists that made custom teams. I was fascinated by the
decal technique since I really admire that all the new kits can be created in
Subbuteo with club badges, sponsor logo's and even player names and numbers.
For me this was a new start of Subbuteo. You could create any team in the world
pinpoint accurate to the real thing. I think I have bought over 200 custom made
teams with decals, mainly Italian serie A and serie B teams and rare teams from
Mexico, Brazil and Argentina which never appeared in the Subbuteo catalogue,
like Jaguares, Fortaleza and Arsenal de Sarandi. When I had learned the decal
technique myself I started producing as much teams as I could but putting quality
first. Each team needs to be as perfect as possible.
3)Quando hai cominciato a creare squadre?
Circa 10 anni fa.Quando la Subbuteo ha fermato la produzione di squadre ho iniziato a cercare Artisti Subbuteo per la creazione di squadre personalizzate. Era affascinato dalla decalcomania specialmente tutti i nuovi kit con scudetti, sponsors ed anche nomi dei giocatori e numeri. Per me e' stato un nuovo inizio del Subbuteo. Potevi creare qualsiasi squadra in modo accurato. Penso di aver comprato almeno 200 squadre personalizzate in decals, principalmente Serie A e Serie B e squadre Messicane,Argentine e Brasiliane rare come Jaquares,Fortaleza e Arsenal de Sarandi. Appena imparata la tecnica decalcomania ho iniziato a produrre piu' squadre possibili ma sempre di altissima qualita'. Ogni squadre deve essere perfetta il piu' possibile.
4)What's on your subbuteo bucket list?
I'm currently
working on a big project, making all teams of the English championship. Each
year I would like to select one competition and make all teams in that
competition. I would also like to make a catalogue illustrating all my custom
teams, like a continuation of the original subbuteo catalogue.
I would love to attend some collection fairs in Italy and
UK! I have not yet had the chance to attend one. And as a collector of course
I hope to add some "holy grale" teams to my collection. You can
always wake me up in the middle of the night if you have a LW 309 Bradford
City, 341 Toulouse, 356 Dumbarton or 528 Motherwell for sale.
4)Cosa c'e' nella tua lista di cose da Fare Subbuteo?
Sto lavorando ad un grande progetto, creando tutte le squadre del campionato Inglese. Ogni anno vorrei selezionare una competizione e crearne tutte le squadre. Vorrei anche creare un catalogo con le illustrazioni di tutte le squadre che ho creato come una sorta di continuazione dell'originale catalogo Subbuteo.
Mi piacerebbe andare a qualche fiera Subbuteo in Italia o in Gran Bretagna. Ancora non ne ho avuto l'occasione. Da collezionista spero di aggiungere squadre rarissime alla mia collezione. Puoi tranquillamente svegliarmi durante la notte nel caso dovessi avere squadre tipo LW ref.309 Bradford City,341 Toulouse,356 Dumbarton oppure la 528 Motherwell.

5)Are you also a Subbuteo Collector and/or a player?
Yes, I
am a passionate collector of LW teams and custom made teams. I have around 300
original LW teams and the collection grows each week, although it's becoming
more difficult to find the teams I want in good quality and against a normal
price. I used to play many solo leagues according to my own playing rules that
I used as a kid, replaying an entire FA Cup season, serie A league or Europeancup
5)Sei anche un collezionista oltre che un giocatore ?
Si, sono un collezionista appassionato di squadre LW e personalizzate. Ho circa 300 squadre LW e la collezione cresce ogni settimana anche se inizia a diventare difficoltoso trovare le squadre che voglio in buone condizioni. Giocavo molti campionati Solo Play con le mie proprie regole che ho usato sin da piccolo e rigiocavo la Fa Cup, la Serie A e la Coppa Campioni.
6)What's your favourite team ? Which one is the rarest one
-if you collect?
In life, my favourite team is Beerschot from Belgium (ref 55
and 123 in the subbuteo catalogue). In Subbuteo my favourite kit designs in my
collection are Motherwell (ref 608) Reading (ref 633) and Belgium away (499).
The most rare teams in my collection would be 123 Austria Salzburg/Beerschot,
519 Gent, 525 Lokeren, 526 Waregem, 563 Darlington/Diest and 764 Eintracht
Frankfurt although rarity is hard to judge. I searched for 2 years for an Aston
Villa PL team with sponsor logo and white shorts while most may say this is not
a rare team at all. (-;
6)Qual e'la tua squadra preferita? Qual e' secondo te la squadra piu' rara (se collezioni)?
Nella vita reale, la mia squadra preferita e' il Beerschot del Belgio (ref.55 e 123 nel catalogo Subbuteo). Nel Subbuteo i miei kit preferiti sono Motherwell 608,Reading 633 e Belgio 499. Quelle piu' rare della mia collezione sono 123 Austria Salzburg/Beerschot, 519 Gent,525 Lokeren,526 Waregem,563 Darlington/Diest e 764 Eintracht Frankfurt anche se la rarita' e' difficile da giudicare. Ho cercato un Aston Villa Premier League con sponsor e pantaloncini bianchi per due anni ed in molti dicono che non e' una squadra rara.
7)We know you are also building a Stadium. Can you tell us
more about it?
It was always a dream to build a custom made stadium with
terraced sections and standing spectators representing the fierce fanatic
supporters. It's still work in progress as I spent most of spare time producing
new teams but some day I will finish it.
7)Sappiamo che stai costruendo uno stadio. Di qualcosa a riguardo.
E' sempre stato un mio sogno quello di costruire uno stadio personalizzato con spalti e spettatori. Sono ancora in Lavori in Corso perche' spendo la maggior parte del mio tempo libero nel creare nuove squadre ma un giorno lo finiro'.

I think
the most difficult teams to make with decals are adidas kits because of the
typical lines on the socks that you have to be very careful with. That always
annoys me (-; Another tricky thing is to
find the correct shade of colour to finish the parts not covered by decals. If
the team has an unusual shade of colour in the kit then this can also be time
consuming to find the correct shade.
8)Qual e' stata la squadre piu' difficile che hai creato e perche'?
Penso che le squadre piu' difficile da riprodurre in decals sono i kits Adidas per le tipiche bande sui calzettoni, bisogna fare molta attenzione a quelle. Una cosa molto noiosa. Un'altra cosa difficoltosa e' trovare la corretta gradazione di colore per finire le parti non coperte dal decal. Se la squadra ha qualche colorazione particolare allora si spende molto tempo per trovare quella giusta.

What's my idea on the future of Subbuteo?
Everyone knows that Subbuteo had a big problem and today
still has to compete as a toy for football fans with computer games like FIFA
and Football manager. I think however Subbuteo can still play a big role if it
finds ways to keep evolving. A fantastic example is the website
https://www.subbuteostadium.com/ making new items with 3D printing to increase
the reality of Subbuteo and give more options for modern and old style Subbuteo
stadiums. We need more initiatives like this. Maybe the technique of 3D
printing can also be used to cost effectively create mass Subbuteo teams one
day. Maybe it will become possible to print the entire Subbuteo catalogue from
your printer at home and to create hundreds of new pages in the Subbuteo
catalogue with all modern kits? Evolutions like that could create a new future.
Kids playing the UEFA cup tie Slavia Prague-Sevilla on their playstation maybe
will have the option to just print out these teams in Subbuteo version and make
them come to live via a 3D printer and then also play the game in their
Subbuteo stadium. One can dream, no?

Qual e' la tua idea sul futuro del Subbuteo?
Tutti sanno che il Subbuteo ha avuto grandi problemi ed anche oggi deve competere con i giochi del computer come FIFA e Football Manager. Penso che pero' ancora il Subbuteo possa dire la sua e giocare un ruolo importante se riesce a trovare la giusta via per evolversi. Un fantastico esempio e' il sito www.subbuteostadium.com che crea nuova oggettistica subbuteo con la tecnica della stampa 3D incrementando la realta' Subbuteo e dare piu' opzioni agli stadi moderni e piu' antichi. Servono piu' iniziative del genere. Forse la tecnica della stampa 3D puo' anche essere utilizzata per creare squadre di Subbuteo in massa in futuro. Forse sara' possibile stampare in 3 D tutte le squadre del Catalogo Subbuteo dalla stampante di casa tua e creare centinaia di nuove pagine del catalogo Subbuteo con tutti i kit moderni? Evoluzioni del genere potrebbero creare un nuovo futuro. I bambini che giocano l'Europa League Slavia Praga contro Sevilla sulla loro play station forse avranno l'opzione di stampare le squadre in versione Subbuteo e farle rivivere tramite la stampa 3D e giocare la partite nel proprio Stadio Subbuteo. Possiamo sognare vero?
