Hello! We are so glad we got in touch with Gary on Twitter! He's from Leicester! A team that you know we love so much! So let's make a new Subbuteo friend today with our new "10ForYou"xActually Subbuteo interview:

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?

Gary Silke from Leicester, England. Co-author along with Derek Hammond of the series of 'Got, Not Got' books, which featured plenty of articles on Subbuteo.

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?

Sono Gary Silke da Leicester, Inghilterra. Co-Autore della saga "Got,Not Got" insieme a Derek Hammond, dove si possono trovare tantissimi articoli sul Subbuteo!  

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

I was about 9 years old when I went round to a friend's house after schooland he got his new Subbuteo set out. I was immediately hooked by the game and begged my parents for a set of my own. They took me into town and bought me the 'Club Edition' from a shop called Modern Toys in Leicester. I then, of course, had to start trying to add the accessories as soon as possible. Although I made do with home-made cardboard stands before I could save up for the real thing.

2)Qual'e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo ? (La tua prima volta)

Avevo all'incirca 9 anni. Andai a casa di un amico che aveva appena ricevuto un set Subbuteo. Ne sono stato subito rapito e pregai i miei genitori di comprarmelo! Mi portarono in citta' per comprare la Club Edition dal negozio di giocattoli a Leicester chiamato "Modern Toys". Ho dunque poi iniziato a comprare tutti gli accessori possibili anche se ho creato da me delle tribune di cartone prima di salvare dei soldi per poter acquistare quelle reali!

3)Are u a Subbuteo collector,a player, a fan or what else?

I still have a lot of stuff left from when I was a kid, but not really a collector. I have spent plenty of time taking photos of Subbuteo, and writing about it as part of our general football nostalgia project. Definitely a fan.

3)Sei un collezionista, un giocatore un fan o cos'altro?

Ho ancora moltissime cose di quando ero piccolo ma non sono un collezionista. Ho impiegato tantissimo tempo nel fotografare squadre Subbuteo ed ho scritto a riguarda nel nostro Progetto Nostalgia. Sono decisamente un fan!

4)Did you ever take part in Subbuteo events ? If Yes which one ?

Nothing official, we had tournaments at each others houses after school,which would often end in arguments and occasionally broken pieces. We'd have the floodlights on for evening kick-offs, but they didn't shed much light, so we'd have torches on as well. We had some epic games. We put a load of flour on the pitch for one game because we had an orange ball and wanted a snowy game. My friend also drew muddy patches on his pitch with a brown felt pen, which better reflected the pitches of the 70s.

4)Hai mai partecipato ad eventi Subbuteo ? Se si quali ?

Niente di ufficiale. Organizzavamo tornei nelle nostre case dopo scuola che spesso finivano in litigate e giocatori mezzi rotti. Usavamo i riflettori per le partite serali ma la loro luce non era poi granche' dunque li supportavamo con delle torce. Abbiamo giocato partite epiche! Una volta abbiamo persino cosparso il campo con della farina perche' avevamo una pallina arancione e volevamo testarla con l'effetto neve. Un amico ha anche dipinto delle pozzanghere marroni sul campo per renderlo piu' simile ai campi degli anni settanta!

5)What do you think about Subbuteo associations like WASPA,FISTF,LegaNazionale Subbuteo? Have you ever been involved with a Subbuteo Club?

I can't really answer this, no experience.

5)Cosa pensi delle vari associazioni Subbuteo come FISTF,LegaNazionale Subbuteo? Sei mai stato coinvolto in un club Subbuteo?

Non posso rispondere a questa domanda non avendo esperienza alcuna.

6)What's your favourite team ? Which one is the rarest one -if you collect?

Leicester City, I have a few of their team sets. I also have a team that is red and yellow hoops with white shorts. Heavyweights. It might be Partick Thistle? I have West Ham and Coventry in Admiral kits, but nothing really rare.

6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita ? e la piu' rara - se collezioni-?

Il Leicester City. Ho alcuni set della squadra. Ho anche una squadra rossa con strisce gialle e pantaloncini bianchi, del tipo HW. Potrebbe essere il Patrick Thistle? Ho anche il West Ham ed il Coventry nella versione kit Admiral ma niente di particolarmente raro.

7)Do you also like the "modern" Subbuteo called Table soccer/football (CDT)?

I've not seen much of it, but you can't beat the old heavyweights. They are a total design classic, like a Vespa scooter or a Spitfire.

They have become iconic.

7)Ti piace anche la versione moderna del Subbuteo chiamata CDT ?

Non ho visto molto a riguardo ma certamente non possono essere migliori delle squadre HW , imbattibili! Sono un totale classico del design come lo scooter Vespa o Spitfire. Sono Icone!

8)Can you tell us Positive and Negative aspects of the nowadays Subbuteo World?

Biggest Subbuteo disappointment?

Now we are grown up and have kids I tried to organise a Subbuteo World Cup for them while I was on holiday. I took a pitch, goals, balls and Holland, Brazil, England, Italy, Germany teams with me.

After about 5 minutes of playing they got bored and wandered off.

I wrote about this in a cartoon in my Leicester magazine The Fox.

Times have changed!

Qual e' stata la piu' grande delusione Subbuteo?

Adesso che siamo grandi ed abbiamo bambini ho provato ad organizzare un Mondiale Subbuteo per loro mentre ero in vacanza. Ho preso le porte, il campo, le palline,l'Olanda,il Brasile,l'Inghilterra,l'Italia e la Germania! Dopo solo 5 minuti di gioco si sono annoiati ed hanno mollato tutto. Ho scritto riguardo questo siparietto in un cartone nel mio giornale di Leicester "The Fox". I tempi sono cambiati!
