1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?
I'm Calum Westwood, of Westwood Table Soccer, based in the
South of England, I first became involved with Subbuteo as a child as my dad
had lots of HW teams, I started as a collector and playing solo leagues. Whilst
I do still have my Subbuteo collection o haven't played in a long while. I am
now a Subbuteo artist.
1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?
Sono Calum Westwood, di Westwood Table Soccer. Vivo nel sud dell'Inghilterra e sono entrato, per la prima volta, in contatto con il Subbuteo quando era bambino in quanto mio padre possedeva moltissime squadre HW. Ho iniziato ad essere un collezionista ed anche giocatore in modalita' SOLO PLAYER. Nonostante abbia ancora la mia collezione di Subbuteo e la mia lunga assenza dal "campo di gioco", sono adesso un Artista Subbuteo.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first
time)
My first memory of Subbuteo I guess would be looking at my
dad's teams, I can remember him having an Ajax team that I was fascinated with
as it seemed so exotic and different, the kit is still one of my favourites
today. I can remember playing on the floor and breaking a lot of players of my
original lightweight teams, usually the left and right full backs as they were
closest to the edge of the pitch and we're right in knee range.
2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo? (La tua prima volta)
Il mio primo ricordo Subbuteo credo sia il guardare le squadre di mio padre. Ero molto affascinato dal suo Ajax, mi sembrava cosi' esotico e diverso. Quel kit e' ancora uno dei miei preferiti! Ricordo che giocavo sul pavimento e rompevo un sacco di miei giocatori LW, specialmente le ali (destra e sinistra) visto che erano quelli piu' vicini al bordo del campo, non distanti dalle ginocchia.
3)Tell us something about your Subbuteo life and how your
subbuteo art started.
I started painting to add new teams to my own collection,
before blank figures were available this usually started with R21 Leeds United
as they were a blank canvas for teams. My first creations were Northampton Town
and Darlington which I still have in my collection. As soon as blanks were
available, I remember Zeugo being first to create blanks and I painted a lot of
teams using these but I don't have any of these now, I had a Fiorentina and a
Real Betis but I must have sold them on eBay. I then started painting a little
to sell and whilst this was partially successful I didn't enjoy it as much as I
used too and there are so many people.offering painted teams I always felt I
wasn't making enough money for the amount of time I was putting in to it, so I
came up with a few different ideas starting with Legends Xi and Through the
Ages teams which eventually became what I do today which is Historical Kit
Frames that are Wal hanging pieces of Subbuteo art containing totally hand
painted figures in a variety of different kits from a clubs history.
3)Di qualcosa riguardo la tua vita Subbuteo e come hai iniziato a creare squadre.
Ho iniziato a dipingere squadre per incrementare la mia collezione personale. Prima che fossero disponibili i giocatori completamente bianchi, iniziavo a dipingere usando una ref.21 Leeds United, visto che erano praticamente una tela bianca su cui creare. Le mie prime creazioni furono un Northampton Town ed un Darlington, che ho ancora nella mia collezione. Appena inziarono a vendere giocatori completamente bianchi, ricordo che la Zuego fu la prima a crearli e li usavo spesso ma adesso non ho piu' neanche uno di quelli. Avevo una Fiorentina ed un Real Betis ma le ho probabilmente vendute su Ebay. Cominciai poi a dipingere per vendere un po' e nonostante fu abbastanza positivo, non mi divertivo molto come in passato e poi ci sono tantissime persone che offrono squadre custom ed ho sempre pensato che il tempo che impiegavo in questo non valeva veramente la pena. Dunque ho avuto alcune idee un po' diverse dalle solite iniziando a creare LEGGENDE XI e gloriose squadre del passato che divennero poi il fulcro del mio attuale progetto HISTORICAL KIT FRAMES che sarebbero delle opere d'arte da appendere sui muri le quali includono figure subbuteo dipinte a mano in diverse varieta' di kits di club del passato.

4)Which one was the hardest team-kit you ever made ?
This changes quite a lot, back in the day I would say hoops
used to be quite hard but as you develop as an artist different challenges come
along. Croatia is I challenge still as getting the checkers in the right
proportion is difficult. Most recently I have painted two Special Edition Kits
for Pescara and Codogno which were both fan designs and both were very hard to
paint.
4)Qual e' stata la squadra piu' difficile da creare?
Ho cambiato risposta varie volte nel tempo. In passato avrei detto le "HOOPS" , abbastanza difficili da riprodurre, ma con il passare del tempo gli skills artistici aumentarono ed inizia ad affrontare sfide piu' complicate. La Crozia e' ancora una delle piu' difficili. Riprodurre i quadretti nelle giuste proporzioni e' molto complicato. Recentemente ho dipinto due kit speciali di Pescara e Codogno, come designs da tifoso e difficili da fare.

5)Tell us the hardest team you want to try to make in the future!
I'm open to most things, there are certain kit design
elements that don't work on Subbuteo, the modern colour fade kits don't lend
themselves well to the brush. I don't know what the next challenge might be,
I've been considering how to recreate the Forward Madison kit released by
Hummel this season and they is definitely not going to be easy.
5)Di qual e' la squadra piu' difficile che vorrai provare a creare in futuro!
Sono aperto a qualunque sfida anche se ci sono alcuni elementi di kits che non si sposano con il Subbuteo, come ad esempio i moderni dettagli di colore a scomparsa che non si prestano benissimo ai pennelli. Non so esattamente quale sara' la mia prossima sfida, stavo pensando forse di ricreare il Forward Madison kit della Hummel di questa stagione e non sara' certamente facile!
6)What's your favourite team ?
I support Leicester City first and foremost they're my team,
my favourite Subbuteo team is Real Betis, I wanted one for a long time and
eventually I got one in my teens, it was a lot of money for me at the time,
around £30 and I almost walked away from it, but I'm so glad I didn't.
6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita ?
Tifo per il Leicester City e loro sono la mia squadra. Mentre le mia squadra preferita nel Subbuteo e' il Real Betis. Ne volevo una da tantissimo tempo e ne possedei una quando ero piu' piccolo, pagato "tanti soldi al tempo" 30 sterline e stavo quasi per desistere dall'acquisto ma sono felice di non averlo fatto!

7)How do you see the Subbuteo World in 5/10 years from now?
The game appears to be on gold health, even though the owner
of the official name doesn't appear to care, and the new version of the game is
a total mess and looks awful, there are so many talented artists out there who
could create unique handpainted or decal teams that would be really unique
and bring about a new avenue of collecting as you may have an AC Milan by one
artist but maybe try to collect another from a different artist. I don't think
the game will go away but without a decent owner behind the name it'll just
continue to be a shadow of its former self.
7)Come vedi il mondo Subbuteo nei prossimi 5/10 anni ?
Il gioco sembra godere di ottima salute al momento, anche se il proprietario del nome Subbuteo sembra non fregarsene molto. Le nuove versioni del Subbuteo sono orribili e ci sono tantissimi artisti bravissimi che potrebbero fare molto meglio dipingendo a mano o usando la tecnica Decal. Renderebbero uniche tante creazioni ed aprirebbero un nuovo mondo nel collezionismo, in quanto, ad esempio, tu puoi avere un Milan creato in pezzo unico da un artista ma puoi anche collezionarne un altro creato da un artista differente. Non credo che il gioco sparira' ma senza un proprietario decete del marchio , il Subbuteo venduto rimarra' sempre l'ombra di quello del passato.
8)What do you think of Subbuteo associations like
FISTF,WASPA,LNS, etc. ?
On a personal level I don't 'like' the modern game as for me
I prefer to recreate closer to the actual game of football, with proper
formations and things. That being said these guys are amazing and they're
keeping the game going in their own way, without them there would be a lot less
interest in the game, so whilst I prefer tradition, the new style guys are
awesome.
8)Cosa pensi delle associazioni Subbuteo come FISTF,WASPA,LNS,etc. ?
Personalmente non mi piace il Subbuteo moderno in quanto a me piace piu' ricreare il gioco veritiero con le formazioni schierate in modo appropriato e tutto il resto. Detto cio', questi ragazzi sono comunque fantastici e mantengono il gioco in vita a loro modo. Senza di loro probabilmente ci sarebbe molto meno interesse nel gioco. Dunque, anche se preferisco quello tradizionale, il nuovo stile di questi ragazzi e'straordinario!

What is the dream for you with Subbuteo?
What is the dream for you with Subbuteo?
I want to produce artwork on a full time basis, for
supporters of all clubs! A chance to create unique and bespoke pieces for
football fans all over the world would be incredible, I've had the pleasure of
creating artwork of lots of clubs but there are still thousands I'm yet to
paint - I'd love for people to get in touch and commission their own work from
us so we can bring the magic of the artwork to more people.
