Actually Subbuteo: "10 For You" with Dave Newbold of Footie Classics (together with Mark Mordecai)!

Hello Subbuteo lovers and readers. We recently "met" this guy on twitter and we totally decided we had to bring it to YOU and introduce to his/their world! Let's discover together our new "10 FOR YOU". You will find also an "old" friend of ours:

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?

Hi I’m Dave Newbold. I’m originally from York but moved to London 25 years ago for work. I’m an advertising creative director, making adverts from TV and posters to digital and social media campaigns.

I’m one half of @footieclassics with an advertising designer/illustrator called Mark Mordecai. We re-imagine famous moments from football and recreate them as literary classic book covers. Amongst the 400 covers we’ve done, we regularly create ones celebrating Subbuteo as a game or using Subbuteo figures as the images.

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?

Ciao! Sono Dave Newbold, originario di York ma ho vissuto a Londra 25 anni per motivi di lavoro. Sono un direttore creativo in ambito pubblicitario, creo pubblicita' per TV e posters ma anche campagne promozionali sui social media.

Sono anche una meta' del progetto FOOTIE CLASSICS insieme ad un inllustratore/design pubblicitario , Mark Mordecai. Praticamente noi ricreaiamo momenti gloriosi nella storia del calcio e li trasformiamo in copertina di libri classici. Insieme alle oltre 400 copertine create, regolarmente ne facciamo alcune incentrate sul Subbuteo come gioco oppure usando figure Subbuteo come immagini.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

Like most as a kid getting a basic set for Christmas, then building up the collection to get more teams and stands etc. We used to have a 6ft pool table that sat on the dining room table so the pitch was pinned on the back of it.

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo? (La tua prima volta)

Come tanti altri, certamente ricevere in regalo un set per Natale, per poi iniziare a collezionare con squadre ed accessori. Avevamo un tavolo da biliardo di quasi 2 metri nella sala da pranzo. Il campo era fissato di sotto.

3)Tell us something about your project!

Currently with @footieclassics we’re doing a series of book covers with Paul Ridler aka @Subbuteolegends. We always loved his models. It occurred to us that he was doing the same as us, recreating famous moments, so we got in touch and wrote stories about the figures he was creating. He sent us photographs and Mark then worked on the look and design to bring it all together conceptually. We’re really happy with how they turned out. They have a glorious nostalgic quality to them that tap into what hooked us in to Subbuteo in the first place.

3)Di qualcosa riguardo il tuo progetto!

Al momento, con FOOTIECLASSICS, stiamo facendo una seriea di Copertine di libri in collaborazione con PAUL RIDLER (SUBBUTEOLEGENDS). Abbiamo sempre adorato le sue creazioni. Ci siamo accorti che lui faceva qualcosa molto simile a noi, ricreando gloriosi momenti, allora decidemmo di contattarlo per iniziare a creare storie riguardanti le figure che lui ricreava. Paul ci invio' delle fotografie e Mark inizio' a lavorarci su in modo da legare il tutto. Siamo molto contenti del risultato finale avendo quella qualita' gloriosa e nostalgica simile a quella che ci fece innamorare del Subbuteo anni fa!

4)Did you ever play or collect Subbuteo?

As a kid my pocket money for a few years went on buying teams mainly. Friends in the street would come round and we’d have our own little mini league of 5 players.

4)Hai mai giocato o collezionato Subbuteo?

Per alcuni anni, tutta la mia paghetta era investita principalmente in squadre. I nostri amichetti di strada  venivano nei nostri paraggi e giocavamo la nostra mini-lega di 5 persone! 

5)What's your favourite team in real life ? and in Subbuteo ?

My team is Liverpool. (Mark is a MASSIVE Evertonian) In Subbuteo it had to be Liverpool always. The red with white pin stripes was my favourite. I remember spending ages putting white numbered stickers on the player’s back. I remember also painting one of the players black so I had John Barnes. To make it as perfect as possible I covered the non skin parts in sellotape.

5)Qual e' la tua squadra favorita di calcio? e nel Subbuteo?

La mia squadra e' il Liverpool. (Mark e' un accanito tifoso dell'Everton) ed anche nel Subbuteo, devo dire sempre il Liverpool. Quella con le righine bianche e rosse era la mia preferita! Mi ricordo che passavo ore cercando di attaccare i numerini adesivi sulle schiene dei giocatori! Ricordo inoltre quando dipingevo uno de giocatori facendolo di colore per "avere" in campo JOHN BARNES. Per farlo il piu' perfetto possibile avevo ricoperto le parti del "tessuto" con dello scotch.

6)What's your best Football Moment in History ?

As a (48y/o) Liverpool fan I’m lucky to have had many great moments. But it’s hard to look beyond Istanbul. I also have a soft spot as a kid watching the 84 European Cup final in the kitchen on a tiny black and white portable TV, because i wasn’t allowed to watch it in the living room.

6)Qual e' il tuo momento preferito nella storia del calcio?

A 48 anni posso dire di avere avuto la fortuna di vivere tantissimi grandi momenti ma e' difficile guardare oltre INSTANBUL ! Merita un cenno anche la finale di Coppa dei Campioni del 1984, la guardai con una piccola tv portatile in bianco e nero in cucina, non mi era permesso di guardarla nel salone! 

7)Do you have any new upcoming projects ?

As a creative I’m personally always looking to do stuff that makes me smile. Usually in football, like my range of Half and Half scarves protesting Half and Half scarves. I called them Half & Barf because the thought of another team on your scarf makes me feel sick!!

On footie classics we’re always looking for new ways to express our ideas with new collaborations and re-interpretations of our idea. We’re now starting to feature in fanzines and on podcasts, which is great. We love the new doors that this project keeps opening for us. 7)Hai/Avete qualche nuovo progetto in arrivo?

Essendo un creativo, sono personalmente sempre in cerca di fare cose nuove che mi possano rendere felice. Usualmente riguardanti il calcio, come la mia gamma di Meta'/Meta' sciarpe in contestazione con altre Meta'/Meta' sciapre. Ho chiamato il progetto HALF & BARF (Letteramente Meta'/Vomito(are))perche' il pensiero di avere un'altra squadra sulla sciarpa della mia squadra, mi dava la nausea!!

Riguardo FOOTIECLASSICS, siamo sempre in cerca di nuove forme di espressione delle nostre idee con collaborazioni e re-interpretazioni. Stiamo iniziando ad uscire su fanzines e podcasts il che e' fantastico. Siamo felici delle porte che si stanno aprendo grazie ai nostri progetti. 8)What's your favourite player and why ?

Personally for me it’s hard to look past Gerrard. He carried an average team for so long that allowed them to punch above their weight. Regularly won games by himself. Right now Firmino is probably my favourite. No one quite like him in what he does for the team. And who doesn’t love some Brazilian audacity like his no look goals?

8)Qual e' il tuo giocatore preferito e perche'?

Personalmente e' impossibile guardare aldila' di GERRARD! Ha trascinato una squadra normale per molto tempo facendola sembrare molto piu' forte di quanto in verita fosse. Vinse, spesso, partite da solo! Nel calcio attuale, decisamente FIRMINO. Nessuno e' come lui in termini di spaccarsi la schiena per la squadra. Poi chi non ama un po' di audacia brasiliana come i suoi goals no-look?

Anything you’d love to do with @footieclassics that you haven’t yet?

We’d love to create a book of our books. Mark recently created the cover for a book about football in Venezuela called "Red wine and Arepas". Maybe we’ll do one that documents a teams full season or maybe a world cup. That could be great.

C'e' qualcosa che vorreste ancora fare con FOOTIECLASSICS che non avete ancora fatto?

Vorremmo creare un libro con i nostri "libri". Mark ha recentemente creato la copertina di un libro sul calcio in Venezuela chiamato "Red wine and Arepas". Forse ne faremo uno che documentera' l'intera stagione di una squadra o un mondiale. Sarebbe meraviglioso!
