Actually Subbuteo:"10 For You" with HELEN LONGWORTH !!

 Hello! Subbuteo is always well alive and present in our lives! So here we go with a great new interview! Let's not waste time in words and let's see who is Helen:

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?

My name is Helen Longworth, I’m a subbuteo artist and I live on the Wirral in North West England not far from Liverpool. Luckily enough, I get to paint subbuteo frames and teams from home as my full time job which fits in well with my family life.

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo?

Mi chiamo Helen Longworth e sono un'artist Subbuteo. Vivo nel Wirral nel Nord Ovest dell'Inghilterra, non lontano da Liverpool. Fortunatamente dipingo squadre e cornici Subbuteo da casa come lavoro a tempo pieno, cosa che si incastra perfettamente con il vivere la mia famiglia.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ?

Being a girl, with a music and film mad family and not coming from a sporty background, I didn’t come across subbuteo until I got married to my husband who promptly moved in his large boyhood collection of 80s lightweight teams, huge collection of accessories and a hoard of stands from his parent’s loft. As someone with an artistic background, the first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful range of kits on display but I didn’t think much more of it at the time. My husband told me many a tale of leagues in his local street and how his team to play with at the time was a Queen’s Park reference 24 black and white hooped team from Scotland. Chosen because none of his friends had it so his coloured kit was unique. This uniqueness was something which immediately struck me.

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo? (La tua prima volta)

Essendo una ragazza proveniente da una famiglia "pazza" per musica e film, senza alcun background sportivo, sono entrata in contatto con il Subbuteo solo quando ho sposato mio marito, che possedeva una larga collezione subbuteo sin da quando era piccolo. Tantissimi accessori tutte stipati nel loft dei genitori. Avendo un istinto artistico, la prima cosa che mi colpi' furono la varieta' dei Kit Subbuteo anche se al tempo mi soffermai molto a riguardo.

Mio marito mi racconto storie di campionati che gioco' nella strada dov'era cresciuto e come soleva usare una squadra in particolare, gli scozzesi del Queens Park FC ref.24, cerchiata bianca e nera. La scelse perche' nessuno dei suoi amici la possedeva e dunque era unica. Questo fatto dell'unicita' mi ha subito colpito!

3)We know you are a Subbuteo Artist! When did you start to make your creations? Are you also a Subbuteo or Table Soccer player?

The painting all began when back in about 2005 when my husband was watching a Peru 2nd handpainted kit that was going out of his price range on eBay and I remarked that I could paint it for him. Immediately, the challenge was laid down but incomprehensibly what appeared a few days later was an India and a Pakistan national lightweight team in their latest kits. Why those teams? I don’t know, perhaps the uniqueness thing again, the opportunity to do something different attracted me to it. A few weeks later the teams had been listed on eBay and were on their way to a collector in Italy. The bug had certainly bitten and more teams soon followed.

3)Sappiamo che sei una Subbuteo Artist. Quando hai iniziato a creare squadre? Sei anche una giocatrice di Subbuteo o CDT ?

Dipingere squadre inizio' nel 2005 quando mio marito stava guardando un Peru' 2nd dipinto a mano, che stava salendo di prezzo su ebay, cosi' gli dissi che avrei potuto dipingerglielo io .

Immediatamente la sfida fu lanciata ma sorprendentemente, due giorno dopo, creai invece gli ultimi kits di India e un Pakistan LW. Perche' quelle squadre? Non saprei, forse nuovamente spunto' quell'attraente carattere di unicita' e l'opportunita' di creare qualcosa di diverso dal solito. Qualche settimana dopo, le squadre vennero vendute ad un collezionista italiano su ebay. La voce si sparse e tante altre squadre ebbero lo stesso

4)What do you think about FISTF and WASPA circuits? Are you part of them? Did you ever won any prize in official tournaments?If Yes, which ones?

As you have probably worked out, I’m not a player so I’m not affiliated but I think they are wonderful organisations which keep the game alive. I’d like to think one of my creations my have graced or even won a tournament. Who knows?

4)Cosa ne pensi dei vari circuiti ed associazioni come FISCT,WASPA e Lega Nazionale Subbuteo?

Come avrete intuito, non sono una giocatrice dunque non ho familiarita' con queste associazioni ma penso che siano ottime per mantenere il gioco vivo! Mi piacerebbe pensare che una delle mie squadre abbia vinto un torneo! Chissa'

5)Tell us something about your Subbuteo life.

Subbuteo is now morning, noon and night as painting teams takes a long time. Probably 8 to 10 hours a day to create a full team often longer for a frame. Every time I see a new kit I have the urge to recreate it in miniature especially if I come across a retro kit or smaller country national team. I just love the colour combinations and trying to represent them on a figure.

5)Di qualcosa riguardo la tua vita Subbuteo.

Il Subbuteo e' la mia mattina, il mio mezzogiorno e la mia notte, visto che dipingere squadre richiede molto tempo. Probabilmente qualcosa tra le 8/10 ore al giono per creare una squadre intera. Tempistiche ancora piu' lunghe per quelle incorniciate. Ogni volta che vedo una squadra nuova ho la smania di ricrearla, specialmente le vecchie magliette di clubs non blasonati e magari sconosciuti. Semplicemente amo le combinazioni di colori e cerco di rappresentarle sugli omini.

6)What's your favourite team ?

My husband has had a lifelong affiliation for a small northern club called Wigan Athletic so I have become an adopted fan of the Latics over the years which probably influences the painting of smaller clubs as well, as we know how integral these are to local communities across the football world.

6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita ?

Mio marito e' sempre stato affiliato emotivamente ad un piccolo club del nord chiamato WIGAN ATHLETIC dunque sono diventata una fan adottiva dei Latics nel corso degli anni, cosa che ha inoltre probabilmente influenzato la mia voglia di dipingere squadre di team non blasonati, che sono comunque tanto amati dalle comunita' locali del mondo Calcio.

7)Do you also Collect Subbuteo items ?

We have quite a wide selection of items. Surprisingly, my husband has a full collection of handpainted Wigan kits and some of the teams I paint for eBay have to be prised out of hands on occasions, reminding him that it is somebody else’s order and not for his own collection. Strangely enough he still doesn’t own a Peru 2nd but some of my collector’s do!

7)Collezioni anche il Subbuteo ?

Abbiamo una vasta selezione di oggetti. Soprendentemente, mio marito ha una collezione intera di kit del Wigan tutti dipinti a mano. A volte, quando creo squadre su commissione ed ebay, devo levargliele dalle mani ricordandogli che sono ordini riservati ad altre persone e non per la sua collezione personale! Incredibilmente, mio marito non possiede un kit Peru' 2nd ma alcuni miei collezionisti , si!

8)The hardest team you made? The hardest team you want to make in the future?

I’ve painted numerous challenging kits. I always find striped and checked kits the hardest to recreate but they always seem to stand out once they are complete. It’s hard to pick out a hardest team but a few spring to mind such as Netherlands 88, Millwall faded diagonal, Croatia home kits and even the Atletico Madrid spider web kit. I am open to most challenges but try to avoid sponsors as on many, but not all, occasions I feel these ruin the beauty of the kit.

8)La squadra piu' difficile che hai riprodotto? La squadra piu' difficile che vorrai creare in futuro?

Ho dipinto moltissime squadre difficili. Trovo che quelle a strisce e quelle a quadrettini, sono le piu' ardue da creare ma sono anche quelle che spiccano a lavoro compiuto. E' faticoso scegliere una sola squadra ma alcune che mi passano in mente sono l'Olanda 1988, il Millwall (fantasia a scomparsa in diagonale), la prima maglia della Croazia ed anche l'Atletico Madrid con la tela di ragno. 
Sono aperta a tutte le sfide ma cerco di evitare gli sponsor perche' credo che, in moltissimi casi, rovinino la bellezza del kit.

What are your proudest subbuteo achievements?

Painting every single national team in the world.

Having a few collectors, who have been with me almost from the start, some who have many hundreds of my teams in their collections.

Having one of my Busby Babes frames in a national museum.

10)Fatti una domanda e dacci una risposta !

Quali sono i personali obiettivi raggiunti che ti rendono ancora orgogliosa? 

Dipingere tutte le squadre nazionali del mondo. Avendo qualche collezionista che mi segue sin dall'inizio, alcuni di loro possiedono anche centinaia di squadre "mie" nelle loro collezioni.
