ACTUALLY SUBBUTEO: "10 For You" with Francesco of SUBBUNKER !!

Hello Subbuteo Lovers! We love to explore Passionate people from all over the world , as you know and today we are getting to know a Subbuteo Club from Italy called SUBBUNKER !! Let's see:

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?

Sono Francesco, mi occupo di strategia per aziende. Penso il Subbuteo sia qualcosa di molto strategico, ma anche dinamico… motivo per cui mi diverte molto giocarci: è come giocare a scacchi ma con la necessità di avere delle skills tecniche. Ma fondamentalmente il Subbuteo è un luogo dove per un tot di tempo, il mondo si miniaturizza e diventa parte di quel magico campo verde.

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo? 

My name's Francesco and I work as a strategist for companies. I think Subbuteo is something really strategic but also dynamic and that's why I like playing it a lot: It's like playing a game of chess but you also need technical skills. Subbuteo is basically a world where, for a while, everything shrinks and becomes part of a magic green field.

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo ? (La tua prima volta) 

1989, a casa di amici (ovviamente). Una domenica di tardo autunno. Avevo 10 anni, e mi trovai difronte a questo tavolo verde e miniature con 3 tocchi… avevamo scarse conoscenze di regolamenti e altro, ma me ne innamorai.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

1989, at some friends' place. It was a sunday in autumn. I was 10 years old and I found myself in front of a green table full of miniature and those 3 small finger's touches. We didn't know much about it nor about rules but I fell in love with it.

 

3)Quando nasce il vostro Subbuteo Club  e dove si trova precisamente?

Il nostro club si trova a Barletta, in Puglia, e si chiama Subbunker. Nasce ad aprile 2021, quando per puro caso torno a possedere un panno verde dopo 29 anni. Nasce anche grazie all’entusiasmo di alcuni amici, membri fondatori, che come me usano la scusa del Subbuteo per stare un po’ insieme. Per questo non posso non ringraziare di cuore Angelo, Dario, Marco, e poi i via via intervenuti Stefano, Alessandro e Lorenzo. Al momento siamo ubicati in una palestra privata chiamata Bunker, in quanto sotterranea, da cui poi il nome del club Subbunker. Per fortuna in Puglia ci hanno subito notato e contattato, così siamo già parte del circuito locale, pur essendo al momento - giustamente - nelle ultime divisioni di categoria. Al riguardo un grande saluto ai presidenti dei Club di Bari (Andrea), e Gioia del Colle (Pasquale).

3)When was your Subbuteo Club founded and where is it exactly?

Our Subbuteo club is located in Barletta, Puglia, and it is called SUBBUNKER. It was founded on april 2021 when I casually got myself to get a green field after 29 years. It was also born thanks to some friends' passion (founders/members) who ,just like me, use the Subbuteo as an excuse to spend time together. That's why I must thank Angelo, Dario, Marco and also Stefano,Alessandro and Lorenzo. Momentarily we are located in a private gym underground called BUNKER, which is also where the name of the club comes from. In Puglia, luckily, we have been contacted quickly and we are already part of the local circuit even if we are still in the lower leagues. I take the occasion to say hi to some clubs'presidents: Andrea from Bari and Pasquale from Gioia del Colle.

4)Illustrate il vostro progetto spiegando inoltre eventuali costi ed info generali.

Il Subbunker si riunisce una volta a settimana, il giovedì. Il costo mensile è più o meno di 10 euro, ma a volte varia al ribasso, in base alle giocate effettive. Il nostro sogno è quello di avere una piccola sede dove tenere almeno 4 tavoli fissi, e raggiungere le 12/16 unità giocanti. Al momento siamo in 7, ma stiamo organizzando un open-day presso una grossa struttura sportiva locale. Obiettivo finale: poter avere un gruppo locale qui a Barletta che ci permetta un sano agonismo settimanale, e offra vari livelli di gioco.

4)Tell us more about your project also explaining eventual costs and general info.

The SUBBUNKER gathers once a week on thursday. There's a monthly fee of - more o less - 10 euros. Sometimes it costs less depending on how many games one can play. Our dream is to have a proper HQ where we could put at least 4 tables and getting at least 12/16 players. We are 7 at the moment but we are about to organize a sort of open-day at a bigger sport location around here. Our goal: managing to be a local group in Barletta which will allow us to have a healthy weekly competition and offer various levels of play.

5)Avete intenzione di partecipare ad eventi Ufficiali Subbuteo in futuro o avete gia partecipato ad alcuni ? se SI , quali ?

Stiamo prendendo parte al campionato regionale organizzato dal Club di Bari. Siamo in ultima categoria, impegnati con 2 team singoli, e puntiamo a non arrivare ultimi. Il sogno sarebbe fare un play-off. Abbiamo fatto un paio di tornei amichevoli in trasferta, prendendo mazzate paurose ma tanto divertimento. Abbiamo imparato tantissimo in pochi mesi.

5)Do you intend of taking part in Official Subbuteo events in the future or did you already take part in them? If Yes, which ones?

We are taking part in the regional league organized by Bari now. We are in the lowest league and we have 2 teams playing as singles. Our goal is to avoid getting in the last position. The dream would be to get the play-off. We did couple of Friendly Tournaments out of Puglia getting beaten badly but it was so much fun anyway. We learned a lot in just few months.

6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita ?  Qual e' secondo te la squadra piu' rara ?

Io amo le miniature LW perché son cresciuto con loro, dato il periodo. Motivo per cui, pur giocando con HW replica, adoro i cataloghi degli anni ’80… e tra tutte ho do sempre la passione per la Germania vincitrice di Italia ’90, oltre che per la Polonia ’82. Il perché non esiste: è una questione di imprinting. In merito alla rarità, ammetto di essere abbastanza ignorante… non sono un appassionato del materiale in sé. Ammiro però tutti coloro abbiano una cultura e conoscenza vasta delle referenze Subbuteo.

6)What's your favourite team ? Which one is the rarest team(If you collect)? 

I love the LW teams because I grew up with them, considering the years. That's why , despite playing using HW Replica, I still adore the Subbuteo Catalogues from Eighties. Over all I think I always loved the Germany National team from Italy 90 World Cup and Poland 1982. There's not a specific reason why: It's an imprinting thing. Talking about rarities I must admit to be rather "ignorant". I'm not passionate about collecting Subbuteo but I admire all the people who have culture and knowledge about all the existent teams.

7)Aspetti positivi e negativi dell'Universo Subbuteo?

Noi del Subbunker (rispondo al plurale) crediamo fermamente che il Subbuteo sia un gioco per gentiluomini. Ergo, rifiutiamo l’arbitraggio, salvo casi in cui venga fatto in pura serenità. I veri player di Subbuteo devono auto-arbitrarsi e trovare la soluzione sempre. Non siamo puristi dello stile Old: non odiamo le porte di ferro, il panno può non essere originale Astropitch… quello che ci piace è trovare gente che condivida ovviamente un regolamento e pensi unicamente a fare gol, e poi a fine partita sorrida all’avversario. Altri aspetti, onestamente, preferiamo non considerarli. Semplicemente siamo a quel punto della vita in cui, se qualcosa non ci piace, non la facciamo.

7)Positive and negative aspects about Subbuteo? 

At SUBBUNKER we believe that Subbuteo is a game for gentlemen. So we refuse the figure of referee except in the case that the job is done in a very take it easy way. The real Subbuteo players should be able to be referees of themselves and always find a solution. We are not purist of the Old Subbuteo: we don't hate the alluminum goals, we don't care if the pitch is an Astropitch or else. What we like is to find people who share same rules and mentality of scoring as many goals as possible and smile to his opponent after the match. We would rather not consider other aspects. We are at that point in life when if you don't like something you just don't do it.

8) Cosa ne pensate dei vari circuiti ed associazioni come FISCT,WASPA e Lega Nazionale Subbuteo? 

Ne penso tutto il bene possibile. Grazie a loro, il Subbuteo torna a essere un gioco, e amo vedere i giovani farlo. Io ho 44 anni, e certo non sono “vecchio”, ma vedere ragazzi adolescenti o meno giocare, è uno spettacolo. Poi va da sé che ci siano dispute su regolamenti e altro, ma è parte del gioco quando il livello sale.

8)What do you think about FISTF and WASPA circuits? Are you part of them ?

We highly think about them. Thanks to them the Subbuteo is coming back to life and I love to see youngsters playing it. I'm 44 years old and I am not that old but seeing kids playing Subbuteo it's like a great show. It's ok there might be discussions about rules and more but that's normal in everything.

9)Raccontaci un particolare del Subbunker Club. 

Abbiamo scelto da subito di non fare quello che è classico per tutti nel Subbuteo, ovvero tornei con squadre ufficiali. Quindi da noi non esiste la serata “campionato inglese” o “rievocazione coppa del mondo Mexico ’70”. Abbiamo deciso di avere i nostri team personali, con nome e logo, e fare competizioni tutte nostre. Così sono nate squadre come il “Pesto Fresco SC”, in quanto il player è un buon produttore di pesto, oppure il "Victoria Kodin”, dato il codino del suo giovane player. Le competizioni sono poi uno spasso: esiste la “Copa de D10S”, dedicata a Diego, o il “Bunker Classic”, torneo disputato nel nostro primo campo, il “Subbunker Stadium”, e via così. Ci siamo anche costruiti da soli le coppe messe simbolicamente in palio.

9)Tell us something in particular about The Subbunker.

Since the very beginning we decided to avoid doing what is considered classic for everyone in Subbuteo: doing tournaments using official teams. We don't have the Premier League night or the Mexico 86 World Cup revival one. We decided to have our own teams, using our own logos and names. You can find teams like "Pesto Fresco SC" (its player is a pesto maker) or the "Victoria Kodin" (its player has a tail on his hair). Talking about the competitions, they are very funny: we have the "Copa de D10S" dedicated to Maradona and the "Bunker Classic", which is played on our first pitch, the "Subbunker Stadium" and so on. We also made ourselves some trophies which we put them as a symbolic prize.
