Hello! Subbuteo is always well alive and present in our lives! So here we go with a great new interview! Let's not waste time in words and let's see who Roberto is:
1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?
My name is Roberto Rainò (born in 1991), I'm a marketing consultant, I'm a musician and I live in Bologna (Italy). I have been playing Subbuteo since I was 10 years old. I grew up in a small town in Puglia (southern Italy) where nobody knew about Subbuteo, so I used to play just with my father: we had and we still have A LOT of fantastic matches when I go visiting my family during holidays. This November I found a new lovely Old Subbuteo Club in a small town nearby: "La Ludoteca" in Castel Maggiore (BO). Here I've found good friends and players to compete with.
2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo? (your first
time)
My first memory: my dad talking about it, about how he learned while he was studying at Florence University. He says he had a "mentor" who won some national competitions, but they did not get in touch in the following years. For my 10th birthday (2001) he bought me a complete box with pitch, goals and two teams (ref 1 & ref 2) with Hasbro bases. My grandfather built for us a wonderful wooden table to play on but, until then, we've been playing on a carpet on the floor! Today I'm 30: my back hurts if I play on a table which is too low, so I fully understand my father's love for his son (and this game) 😅
3)We know you are a Subbuteo Artist! When did you start to
make your creations? Are you also a Subbuteo or TableSoccer player?
I started painting this summer (June 2021). My first goal is to complete my collection with teams that I could not buy/find when I was a kid. Only this year I learnt the differences between Subbuteo and Table Soccer. As I said previously: I've grown up playing with Hasbro bases, I didn't know anything about bases, discs, HW, LW ... I still love Hasbro bases: they're beautiful to see, steady, heavy but you can still make some "trick" surrounding the opponents figures to get the ball (what we call "girello" in italian). On the other hand, they are not allowed in Old Subbuteo circuits and they can't compete with modern Table Soccer bases which are way more heavy and flat. This makes me a little sad, just like in the movie "Balto": "Not a wolf, not a dog. All he knows is what he's not" 🙁 Anyway, if I have to pick, I always prefer Old Subbuteo.
4)What do you think about FISTF and WASPA circuits? Are you part of them ? Have you ever won any prize in official tournaments? If Yes, which ones?
... I'm an outsider ... a renegade! 😄 Just joking; I actually don't know a lot about official circuits. Maybe in the future I will have an Idea.
5)Tell us something about your Subbuteo life.
As you can tell from my previous answers: it's a simple life, it ain't much but it's honest work. I play every friday at the club and I paint during my free weekends. I'm planning to make some space in my man cave (among musical instruments and LEGO sets) for a table in order to play at home and teach Subbuteo to some friends.
6)What's your favourite team?
I've always been a big fan of Roberto Baggio (that's why I like Fiorentina) and I support Lecce which is the main team of my native land (Salento, Puglia). In general, I don't have a favorite team but I have a strict rule: I always support the less famous/strong team. Example: in a hypothetical Chelsea VS Plymouth Argyle --> I support Plymouth!
7)Do you also Collect Subbuteo items?
No, I do not consider myself a collector. I just collect the teams I paint, but this does not count, does it?
8)The hardest team you made? The hardest team you want to make in the future?
Oh-oh-oh! This makes me proud! My biggest challenge is, for sure, Croatia national team! I've just started with one player and the result was awesome, I totally did not expect that! In the next months I hope I will finish the whole team. I've decided to go slow and easy (max 2 figures per day) because I definitely don't want to get exhausted and sick about painting! So far, the hardest team I have made is Gremio (1 week ago) and I plan to paint Fluminense as well.
9)Give us your social media links:
Sorry, I still don't have a social media page where I post my artwork, I usually share it on a Facebook group called SUBBUTEO - Il calcio in miniatura ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/421084285129097 ), you can find my post looking for my name "Roberto Rainò". You can also find me on the Italian Old Subbuteo Forum https://oldsubbuteo.forumfree.it/ as "Robbo91".
10)Make yourself a question and give us an answer!
What do you NOT like about Subbuteo world?
I've just entered this magic world and met other
people to share this passion, I've seen many forums and groups on facebook. I'm
happy about that but I do not like the following things:
1 - I see a strong and (not so) silent war between Old
Subbuteo and Table Soccer players. In particular, I perceive the presence of
some extremists among the first ones: they see Table Soccer as the devil, an
enemy to defeat, a childish and goofy copy of the noble art of old style. In my
opinion, this creates a snobbish and unfriendly atmosphere and discourages
people who may want to explore this world (young people in the first place). In
my opinion, we can't make Table Soccer people discover Old Style if our arrogant
premise is "You are dumb, I'm the real player here!". It's ok keeping
our preferences, but everyone should play anything freely and without feeling
judged. For the future of this game: make peace, not war.
2 - There are NO GIRLS! Come on! I cannot believe that
Subbuteo/TS players just have sons and no daughters!
Ancora secondo me, non possiamo avvicinare persone del CDT all'Old Subbuteo se l'arroganza Old gia' assume il CDT come stupido.
Thanks a lot to Roberto for sharing his love and passion for the Subbuteo world and we TOTALLY AGREE 100% ABOUT YOUR n.10 answers!!!!
