Actually Subbuteo:"10 For You" with David Forsyth !

It has been a while! We know that ! We are sorry but we really had too much going on and also we upgraded majorly our Subbuteo Collection and we already started to show you everything thanks to out new section ACTUALLY COLLECTION! Our interviews are back ! 
We are about to introduce you a David who enjoys the SOLO PLAYER mode and will tell us something about it:

David and his pitch ! 

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo? 

I am David, a retired Maths teacher, born in Blackpool but grew up on Merseyside. I now live in County Durham, in the North East of England. Ever since being given my first Subbuteo set, I always loved the game. I am now on my third return to it, and enjoying it even more than I did in days gone by.

1)Chi sei, Cosa fai, da dove vieni ed in che modo la tua vita e' legata al Subbuteo?

Sono David, un maestro di Matematica in pensione, nato a Blackpool ma cresciuto nel Merseyside. Adesso vivo nella Contea di Durham, nel Nord Est dell'Inghilterra. Amo il Subbuteo sin Da quando ricevetti il primo set. Sono attualmente al mio Terzo Ritorno di Fiamma e mi diverto ancor di piu' che nel passato.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

I remember it well. November 1964, I was twelve, and my parents had gone Christmas shopping in Liverpool. When I came home from school, they said that they had bought me a little present before Christmas. In came this large wrapped parcel, which when I excitedly opened, was a Subbuteo Continental box set.
I shall never know why it wasn’t given to me for Christmas, but in terms of sustained interest, was probably the finest present they could ever have bought for me.

2)Qual e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo? (La tua prima volta)

Lo ricordo molto bene. Novembre 1964, avevo 12 anni ed i miei genitori andarono a fare acquisti di Natale a Liverpool. Tornato a casa dopo scuola mi dissero di aver comprato un regalino per me prima di Natale. C'era questo grande pacco incartato contenente un Subbuteo Continental Box set. Non sapro' mai perche' non mi fu dato a Natale, ma in termini di interesse prolungato, quello fu probabilmente il miglior regalo che mi abbiano mai potuto fare.

3)What brought you to play Subbuteo in this particular SOLO mode ? Tell us something more about it because many people don't know much about.

As an only child, whose parents were not at all interested in football, I soon began to play matches on my own (called solo nowadays) between two teams who wore the standard red and blue kits which came in the box. Initially it was practice for playing with friends.

As I bought some more teams, I started playing several solo matches between  teams who wore the colours of my teams.

At the same time, I noticed that the teams we were reading about in the comic stories of the day, Melchester Rovers, Pressley Rangers, Blackton Rovers among others, all won the League but never played each other, so I put them all together, included some team names of my own,  and played a small league.

I then wanted to give the teams a bit more identity, so began put ‘real’ players in them, chosen from various clubs, which also gave them a tactical formation and style of play.

This gave me the opportunity to try out some different formations, and I particularly enjoyed the matches between teams of very different formations. I have used this method whenever I returned to the game, and my older, more traditional teams, have kept the same names over all these years.

Even today, when I have thirty-two teams, no two of them play exactly the same formation. Some will have big strikers, and will play the ball into them, hoping for headers or flicks. Others will have smaller players who will play in spaces, possibly a little deeper. Some teams have midfielders lining up just in front of the back four, others start with them more advanced and several now don’t line up with them alongside each other. Several teams have three centre backs, with the wing backs more likely to play alongside the midfielders

Each solo match, to me, is more than just two anonymous sets of players, but a tactical contest, played slowly, to the traditional Advanced Rules, for fifteen minutes each half.  I have found the positioning of the players to have become even more interesting, since I first bought a box set of ‘flats’ about eighteen months ago, and became ‘hooked’.  

3)Cosa ti ha portato a giocare il Subbuteo in questa particolare modalita'? Di qualcosa a riguardo perche' molte persone non hanno una grande idea !

Essendo figlio unico con genitori totalmente disinteressati al calcio, inizia presto a giocare da solo utilizzando le classiche due squadre, rossa e blu, che erano incluse nel Set. Inizialmente era piu' un allenamento per quando avrei affrontato i miei amici.

Avendo comprato altre squadre inizia a farle giocare contro in partite singole. Allo stesso tempo, Avevo anche notato che le squadre che leggevamo nei fumetti come Melchester Rovers,Pressley Rangers, Blackton Rovers tra le tante, vincevano tutte il campionato ma non giocavano mai contro, dunque le misi una contro l'altra in una piccola Lega, includendo inoltre altre squadre con nomi creati da me.

A quel punto volevo anche dare una maggiore identita' alle squadre cosi' decisi di dare agli omini dei nomi di veri giocatori scelti tra vari clubs, e questo diede inoltre loro la possibilita' di avere un proprio stile di gioco ed  una tattica.

Avevo dunque la possibilita' di provare differenti formazioni e mi divertivo particolarmente quando usavo due squadre con tattiche completamente diverse. Ho sempre fatto cosi' ogni volta che sono tornato a giocare Subbuteo e le mie vecchie squadre ancora oggi mantengono gli stessi nomi.

Adesso ho 32 squadre e tutte hanno uno stile di gioco differente. Alcune hanno grandi attaccanti dunque la palla verra' servita a loro maggiormente sperando in colpi di testa o tocchi; altre hanno giocatori piu' bassi che giocano nello spazio e possibilmente in profondita'. Altre ancora hanno i quattro centrocampisti in linea di fronte alla linea difensiva o messi qua e la piu' avanzati. Altre ancora hanno solo 3 difensori centrale con due terzini che giocano piu' come ali allineate ai centrocampisti.

Ogni partita SOLO e' molto piu' che una semplice partita tra due squadre ma una gara di tattica, giocata lentamente usando le Tradizionali Regole Avanzate e per 15 minuti per tempo. Da quando ho comprato un set di giocatori piu' recente, con base piatta, trovo ancora piu' interessante posizionare i giocatori sul campo. Ne sono rapito.

4)Did you ever take part in Subbuteo events ? If Yes which ones ? 

I have never played in any Subbuteo tournaments.  I never really thought I would be good enough, and used to spend my weekends either helping out with school sport, or going to matches.

4)Hai mai partecipato ad eventi Subbuteo? Se Si quali?

Non ho mai giocato alcun torneo Subbuteo. Non ho mai pensato che sarei stato all'altezza ed usualmente passavo i miei week-ends tra progetti sport a scuola o andando a guardare partite.

5)Are you also a Subbuteo Collector?

No. I never bought a team because I thought it might become a collector's item. When I thought I'd finished with them,  I always passed on my teams to good homes  where I hoped they would be appreciated, with someone else getting as much enjoyment from them as I'd had.  If any ever became valuable, good luck to the new owner.

5) Sei anche un Collezionista di Subbuteo?

No.Non ho mai comprato una squadra perche' ho pensato che potesse diventare un oggetto da collezione. Quando pensavo di avere "chiuso" con il subbuteo mi sono sempre preoccupato di trovare una buona casa per le mie squadre, da qualcuno che le avrebbe amate quanto me. Se una di quelle poi e' diventata di valore , beh buona fortuna al nuovo proprietario!

6)What's your favourite team ?

I have supported Plymouth Argyle for over fifty years, although I don’t get to see many matches nowadays as their ground is about 650 km from where I live.

When I was a boy I went to watch Everton, and I still follow them with interest.

6)Qual e' la tua squadra preferita?

Sono tifoso del Plymouth Argyle da piu' di 50 anni anche se non guardo molte partite al giorno d'oggi visto che lo stadio e' a circa 650 kilometri da dove vivo.

Da piccolo andai a guardare l'Everton e seguo ancora la squadra con interesse.

7)Which one is the rarest Subbuteo team for you ?

I’ve never set out to obtain any particularly rare teams, although on a visit to Plymouth a few years ago, I purchased the Subbuteo  ‘Plymouth Argyle 2014-15’, which is the only team I have ever bought for display only.

7)Qual e' la squadra piu' rara secondo te?

Non mi sono mai interessato a possedere una particolare squadra rara, ma quando visitai Plymouth, qualche anno fa, comprai un Subbuteo Plymouth Argyle 2014-2015 che e' inoltre l'unica squadra che abbia mai comprato a scopo meramente espositivo.

8)Can you tell us what are the positive points and the negative ones about the SOLO PLAYER life ?

Subbuteo is my hobby, as is football itself.  Every game I play is between two teams who each have their own formation and style of play. In addition, behind the scenes, there is an administration side, where the clubs have to sign players, pay wages, and win prize money, or not.

In each close season transfer window, some clubs may wish to buy new players, while others may need to sell. There is also a ‘house rule’ that, as each club has a squad of thirteen or fourteen  players, any player who seldom plays for two seasons is entitled to request a transfer, which the club is obliged to accept.  In its own way, this aspect of the league is as exciting as playing the matches. It is challenging to try and be fair to all clubs. Generally speaking, the clubs who finish highest in the league tend to get what they want, provided they can afford the transfer fees.

Each player is ‘graded’ according to which division he played most of his football, and this determines his wages and any transfer fee.

All of this provides me with plenty to occupy me and enjoy my hobby,  or as I now call it, my retirement project.

8)Ci puoi dire quali sono gli aspetti positivi e negativi della vita da SOLO PLAYER ?

Il Subbuteo e' un hobby cosi' come lo e' il calcio. Ogni partita e' disputata tra due squadre ognuna con il suo proprio stile di gioco. In aggiunta, dietro le quinte, c'e' anche un lato amministrativo dove i clubs devono comprare giocatori, pagare salari e possibilmente vincere premi in denaro.

In ogni finestra di mercato le squadre possono acquistare giocatori o sono forzate a venderli. C'e' anche una "regola della casa", per i club aventi 13 o 14 giocatori, quando questi non giocano abbastanza per due stagioni allora hanno il diritto di richiedere un trasferimento, obbligatoriamente accettato dal club. Questo aspetto della Lega e' eccitante tanto quanto il gioco in se. E' impegnativo cercare di essere giusto con tutte le squadre. Generalmente le squadre che arrivano prime in classifica riescono a fare movimenti di mercato dato che possono permetterselo. 

Ogni giocatore ha un Grado che dipende dalla divisione in cui ha giocato di piu' e questo determina inoltre il suo salario ed il prezzo di vendita.

Tutto cio' mi da tanto tempo da dedicare al mio hobby e divertirmi. Lo chiamo adesso il mio Progetto della Pensione.

Do you have any unique house rules?

Generally, I play to the Advanced Rules, as I find that turn based play is better suited to the solo game. I do, however, include several house rules, many of which are derived from the earliest rules of the game, and I believe enhance the quality and fairness of matches.

                                            

I) I don’t have the goalkeeper on a wire or rod, and haven’t done so from the very early days. I don’t think it makes sense scoring too easy as the keeper be placed anywhere inside his area before a shot, or he can come out and play the ball whenever it is inside the penalty area, although an error can be costly.

II) I play the old rule for fouls, where if a player touches an opponent without first touching the ball, a free kick is awarded, whether the player goes on to play the ball or not.

III) I never actually take a penalty kick. After all the preparations, I roll a dice, and a ‘1’ represents a miss. I think it’s fairer in solo play.

IV) I have never liked the ‘back’ rule at blocking flicks, so when there is any infringement, a free kick is awarded (although advantage can be played) and if a playing figure touches the ball, it is handball.

V) New for my present season, the above rule has been extended to include contact at positional flicks at set pieces.  No free kick is awarded, as the ball is dead, but the offence is recorded as ‘ungentlemanly conduct’. 

Any player who infringes three times in a match is sent off.

Generally, my matches are very slow, as I’m aiming for precision, as in the original game. I’m a recent convert to flats, which places greater emphasis on the positional aspect of the game.  

10)Fatti una domanda e dacci una risposta!

Hai qualche particolare ed unica "Regola della Casa"?

Generalmente gioco usando le Regole Avanzate, in quanto trovo la giocata a turno molto adeguata alla modalita' SOLO. Comunque includo alcune Regole della Casa, molte delle quali derivano dalle vecchie regole Subbuteo, che migliorano la qualita' e l'imparzialita' delle partite.

I) Non uso il portiere con l'asta da quasi sempre. Non ha senso segnare troppo facilmente dunque il portiere puo' essere posizionato dovunque all'interno della sua area prima di un tiro. Certo un errore puo' costare caro.

II) Gioco con le vecchie regole per il fallo, dunque se un giocatore tocca l'avversario senza toccare il pallone in primis, allora sara' assegnato un fallo a prescindere.

III) Non uso i calci di rigore ma uso un dado per deciderne l'esito. Quando esce in numero 1 allora signifca Rigore sbagliato. Mi sembra giusto in questo modo.

IV) Non mi e' mai piaciuta la regola del back dunque quando c'e' un'infrazione semplicemente viene assegnato un calcio di punizione e quando una figura in gioco tocca la palla conta come fallo di mano.

V) Come nuova regola di quest'anno , la regola numero IV e' stata estesa includendo il contatto con altri giocatori durante gli spostamenti di posizionamento durante un calcio piazzato. Non saranno assegnate punizioni ma sara' considerato come una sorta di comportamento antisportivo ed ogni giocatore che attua cio' per 3 volte viene direttamente espulso.

Usualmente le mie partite sono molto lente in quanto punto sulla precisione. Recentemente mi sono convertito alle squadre con basi piatte che aggiungono grande enfasi all'aspetto del posizionamento dei giocatori del gioco.
