After spending millions and millions in buying players still the Paris Saint Germain didn't manage to get through the Real Madrid so their CL adventure is already finished. It wasn't easy to think of getting back from the 3-1 First leg anyway. Neymar was still at the box for an injury and Mbappe, Cavani and company weren't good enough but honestly probably Real Madrid couldn't be beaten by them last night. Zinedine Zidane put in a great team which played very good match getting even the lead at 52' with a Cristiano Ronaldo's header. A lucky deflection at 71' by Cavani gave the French a momentarily equalizer that will result totally useless. Indeed Casemiro killed the match at 80'. 1-2. Another very bad performance by the PSG which seems to be not mature enough to get forward in this competition. Also players like Verratti are not really doing much and especially him even got a red card leaving his teammates in 10 men in a super important match: you cannot do this. Disappointing Emery will probably leave the club at the end of the season.
Only a 0-0 between Liverpool and Porto but it was very clear that Klopp didn't want to risk anything and taking the 0-5 First leg advantage for granted. The British could take a breath and rest some players for much more important coming up fixtures in the Premier League where they aim to the second place!
Tottenham literally threw away the qualification against a poor but full of International experience Juventus. When Son-Heung Min gave the 1-0 lead to the Spurs at 39' the enthusiasm was very high at Wembley Stadium. Suspicious behaviour in the Tottenham penalty box when Douglas Costa was apparently brought down but with no foul remarked by the referee. The audience judged the referee conduct as scandalous so it's not only in the Italian Serie A that criticisms show up sometimes. Buffon did few great saves during the match and did a good performance overall - even if the Spurs' goal was most of his fault - just like Giorgio Chiellini who was a solid wall saving his team in at least 4 decisive situations. The two top Bianconeri strikers Higuain and Dybala did their job turning the result upside down and bringing the team to a great come back 1-2. Four minutes of black out for the Spurs between 59' and 62' in which they got two counter-attack goals and a team cannot play like this at this high level. Pochettino must be very disappointed even if Tottenham dominated completely the match just like in the First leg. Allegri probably made some mistakes in putting the team on the pitch but whatever, they still made it and he corrected during the match some eventual bad formations choices.
Guardiola can't be that angry for the 1-2 loss against Basel. The 4-0 in the first leg allowed Pep to use a very different team giving rest to most top players even if the ones on the pitch weren't THAT bad as you can imagine! The home team got the lead with Gabriel Jesus at 8' and got reached by a powerful close range shot by Elyounoussi at 17'. Lang scored the winning goal for Basel at 71' which is a rather kind consolation prize considering how far they got in the competition.
Next week's matche will shape the upcoming Champions League Quarter Finals! So let's wait to see who's gonna make it : Roma-Shaktar Donetsk (F.L.1-2) and Manchester United-Sevilla (F.L.0-0).
