1) Who are you, what do you do,
where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo?
I
am a Professor of History at Michigan State University in the United States,
where I specialize in African Studies and the relationship between football and
society. I was born and grew up in Rome, Italy, where Subbuteo boomed in the
1970s and 1980s. The game has been part of my life for almost as long as I can
remember. I was probably about five or six years old when I started playing
against my older brothers then in the early 1980s I started traveling with my
brother Daniel by train all over the country for tournaments--it was a lot of
fun and felt quite adventurous. These days, I play fairly regularly with my
teammates at Grand Rapids Table Soccer Club, where we run WASPA events and an
annual FISTF Satellite in May, and occasionally travel around the United States
for American Subbuteo Association tournaments.

2) What's your first memory about
Subbuteo? (your first time)
In
1975 or so, my brothers somehow managed to acquire a set of floodlights for our
“Continental” Subbuteo set. Once each of the four massive batteries were
connected, we lined up the blue team (Italy! Como!) and the red team (USSR!
Varese!) in the center circle and switched the lights on: wow! The lights only
lasted a few minutes, but it was magic. Maybe that’s the moment I fell in love
with the game.
3)Are you a Subbuteo Player?
also a Collector and what else?
I
am not and never have been a collector. I own half a dozen teams on Extreme
Works, Astrobase, and Tchaaa bases, as well as a few Zeugo teams just for fun.

4) Did you ever take part in Subbuteo
events? If Yes which one?
My
first official tournament was the Lazio regional of the 1978 Guerin Subbuteo: I
could barely reach the table! I qualified for two Guerin nationals in the early
1980s before moving to the United States and almost forgetting about Subbuteo. Then
in 1997 I found out that the American Subbuteo Association was holding its
national tournament near me, so I decided to show up with my “Old Subbuteo”
Juventus. Despite being quite rusty, I reached the quarterfinals where I lost
(0-1) to the eventual champion. Once again, life took over. Then one night a
few years ago I was clicking away on the web and I stumbled upon the Michigan
Subbuteo Table Football Association website. These good lads introduced me to
the new game (rules, equipment, etc.) and eventually got me back into
tournament play. I have won a couple of FISTF Satellites, placed second in the
2015, 2017, and 2018 ASA Nationals (Veterans category); and third in the 2017
American Subbuteo National League. Later this year, I will be playing in my
second FISTF World Cup as part of Team USA in Gibraltar.
5)Tell us something about your
Subbuteo life.
What
keeps Subbuteo in my life as I approach the age of 50 are two things: (a) the
enjoyment of the game that most closely resembles soccer’s emotional tension;
and (b) the friendships with many fellow players around the country and the
world.

6) What's your favourite team?
I went to my first Juventus match in 1976 so it may not be a surprise that my current favorite subbuteo team is a Juventus 2013-14 away (the one with the yellow jersey and blue shorts) on blue Extreme Works Universal bases. I like their speed, delicate touch, and deadly chipping capability.
7)Which one is the rarest
Subbuteo team for you?
Not
being a collector, I’m not sure about this one.
7)Qual'e' secondo te la squadra piu' rara ?
Non essendo un collezionista non saprei dirti.
8) What do you think about the
"Old Subbuteo"? Can you compare it with the "New Subbuteo"?
What do you like about both and what you don't?
I
prefer table soccer to "old Subbuteo" because of the fantastic
quality and variety of bases available and also the overall speed of the new game.
However, I still like aspects of Subbuteo romantico,
such as the “moving back” rule (which favors attackers) and the beautiful green
plastic fence.
